Fall Festival 2010

Luv Shack Ranch Fall Festival Auction 2010

halloween_auctionFor many years Luv Shack Ranch has been doing wonderful things in helping to rescue and rehabilitate horses while working with troubled kids. LSR, being a non-profit organization, had to come up with ways to help support their programs annually. One of these was the FALL FESTIVAL. A feature of the Fall Festival was the “Silent Auction”.

After the Fall Festival of 2007, seeing that the profits from the auction weren’t anywhere near his expectations, Roman Benyk got involved. As a volunteer for LSR, Roman vowed to elevate Luv Shack Ranch’s “Silent Auction” in to being one of the top Silent Auctions in the North Valley.online_auction

Since the 2008 auction, LSR has been able to secure many items that have made people take notice. From fine dining in the Phoenix area, to an overnight stay at a Scottsdale hotel. Alluring items such as R/T plane tickets, train tickets, getaways and Bed & Breakfasts throughout the state of Arizona. As each year brings in new and more appealing items, we invite you to sign in to the auction and view our items. Please bid and help support LSR. 100% of ALL proceeds from this auction go directly back to supporting LSR.

Please note:  In order to place bids on items in the Luv Shack Ranch online auction, you need to register on the site.  If you don't already have an account, it's very easy to register.  Just click the register button, complete your information, then login using your new account.  That's it; you're ready to begin bidding on the fabulous deals available in this year's auction.

BOWL-A-RAMA for Animal Rescue August 7th

Bowl-A-Rama 2010Announcing the 8th Annual BOWL-A-RAMA for Animal Rescue on Saturday, August 7th at the AMF Scottsdale Lanes.  Ninety rescues participate in this PACC911 (Phoenix Animal Care Coalition) event.

Last year the overall winner was a Rat Rescue -- yes, you read it correctly.  Rats don't require special trailers to pick up and haul them, a large amount of space to house and exercise them, or large volumes of feed to rehabilitate them, all of which are necessities when rescuing a horse.

AMF Scottsdale Lanes is at 7300 E Thomas Rd (just E. of Scottsdale Rd).  Our time to present our table, shout our cheer, and have our young volunteers bowl is 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The event is Saturday, August 7.

There is someone I'd like you to meet....

There is someone I'd like you to meet.

Her name is BELLE and she was an unwanted horse.

She was slaughtered-bound for the butcher shops of Mexico.

Luckily, Joey Ogburn, President and founder of the LUV Shack Ranch Horse Rescue, was able to save her from that fate.

alt

When my husband, Warren, and I arrived at the ranch to volunteer that day in April 2008, we saw a pathetic horse, at least 100 lbs. underweight, whose mane, once beautiful and flowing, was matted and ripped out in places.  Her rump was burned from being cattle prodded.  Her coat was falling out, her eyes were empty and, to add insult to injury, our vet, Dr. Sickler, announced she was 9 months pregnant and only 2-3 years old.  I will never forget that day.  We looked at Belle and made her a solemn promise...she would never be hungry or mistreated again.

So began Belle's journey.  With Joey's help and support, we used many supplements and a lot of good Bermuda grass hay to get some weight back on Belle.

Horses in School Programs

Horses at SchoolThis year we have been very fortunate to be part of a "pilot program" in a public middle school. Using the "Cowboy Poetry" curriculum and selected students, Luv Shack Ranch horses have been instrumental in teaching: Leadership, Trust, Punctuality, Thriftiness, Honesty, Making Good Decisions, and other character lessons.

Relay Race at Ranch

There is a classroom component of each unit and then the hands-on at the Ranch. The horses then become their teachers. The transformation in the selected students has just been amazing! Student smiles, confidence, and eagerness to participate are some of the outward signs.  The students have been applying it in their personal lives as well and that is why the principal and vice-principal of this school have approved to continue the program.  We are are looking forward to the next school year!

You Don't Throw a Whole Life Away...

Kate & AnnieAs soon as Dr. Sickler DVM told me it was okay to jump Annie, I texted Angela, my instructor, who started jumping her the very next morning!  Annie has loved trotting and cantering over ground poles, but it's obvious she has been eyeing the jumps in the arena. Angela started her over some cross-rails and was even able to canter over a double bounce (3 jumps, with no strides in between). She seemed a little clumsy at first but her second day of jumping was much more graceful.

I've been riding enough at this point, that my strength and balance have come back and I'm now able to ride Annie more often. Before, Angela was the only one who really rode her and I might ride her the last few minutes of my lesson.  But in my lesson on Saturday, I spent the entire time on Annie and even cantered!  Angela thinks I am now able to ride Annie whenever I want so, although I will continue my lessons, I'll ride Annie a few times a week without Angela's assistance, which is what I did this morning.

It's hard to believe that when I met Annie, I couldn't lead her down the street, couldn't brush her or pick up her feet as she spooked at everything and fought everyone every step of the way.  I'm not really sure how or when it happened, but she trusts people now.  People always tell me how beautiful she is, that she's one of the sweetest horses they've ever seen, how incredibly calm she is for a 4 year old, and how she doesn't have a mean bone in her body.  I can't believe I'm responsible for most of that.

Saved from an Uncertain Fate - Arab Mare & Baby

Arab Mare & FillyOn 6/10/10,  Joey received a call asking if she could take a mare and her filly. If not, they would go to auction and an uncertain fate.Arab Filly

They have not been seen by our vet yet, but the mare appears to be in good overall health. The filly has cuts on all four legs and hooves, probably from her mom stepping on her during the trailer ride. The baby appears to be 4-5 months old.

Because of people like Lauren (see below email from Joey to a young girl who donated her Birthday money) our rescuing horses is possible:
