A candlelight vigil was held at 7 p.m. February 27 for the two foals we lost a week apart. Our 22-year-old Arabian mare, Maya, gave birth to her baby a month too soon; the colt had died in the womb. We named him Maya's Titan. Within a week, Joey received a call from a family whose mare, Bueno, had died and her day-and-a-half old colt needed a nursing mother. Joey took Maya to the yet unnamed baby and after 4 hrs., the little foal was nursing. It was agreed this little guy should be named Bueno's Titan.
The family kept a constant vigil with Maya and Titan, supplementing Maya's milk with a bottle. At 3 a.m. Titan started to fail and by 6 a.m. he wasn't getting up. Joey came and took Titan to the hospital where he once again rebounded, his vital signs all looking good. He spent the night and, unfortunately, even with constant medical watch, Titan died in the morning hours.

(LuvShack Ranch, September 2009) With so much sadness, I am forced to amend my previous article. Despite our best efforts and because of her worsening condition, our precious Daisy was euthanized by Dr. Sickler at about 3:30PM on Sunday. Unfortunately our prayers could not overcome the abject cruelty of man. When will this senseless slaughter cease??
Daisy will be forever in our hearts.

(LuvShack Ranch, October 2009) If September wasn't bad enough for us, we have started October on a sad note, too. Our big and beautiful strawberry roan, Lyra, was humanely put down due to an aggressive form of cancer and heart failure. She deteriorated very quickly, and as sad as it was to let her go, at least this time it was not because of the cruel hand of man.

(LuvShack Ranch, October 2009) Sometimes the best thing you can do for a horse is to help end its suffering with compassion and dignity. Joey received a call for help from a man in Goodyear. His horse had an accident while being shod--its leg was broken and the horse needed to be put down. The expense to humanely put his horse down was something he could not afford.
Not fully understanding what situation we would meet, we prepared our medical bag to temporarily treat the leg and supplies to help in the loading of a horse with a broken leg. What we weren't prepared for was the look in the eyes of a horse who had been suffering for TWO months.
