Elijah helping orphaned MilagroElijah is a 3 yr. old donkey gelding who was rescued on 8/7/08.  He'd been bought at auction and was awaiting shipment to slaughter.  The owner agreed to sell him for $25 and Elijah became a member of the Luv Shack Ranch.

We had no idea how young he was or how valuable a herd member he would become.  He was approximately 1 1/2 yrs. old and liked to chew on everyone's clothes.  After being trained to respect people, he has settled in and is a favorite among the volunteers and all members of the herd.  Donkeys make excellent nannies in a herd and he has successfully helped Deputy, Izzy, Milagro, Jersey Girl, Scout, Rufus, and Dakota get over separation anxiety when they were weaned.  Donkeys also protect the herd by keeping stray dogs and coyotes away.  He, Rufus and Tumbleweed can be seen running the fence line when they spot stray dogs and coyotes.

Summer and LexiSummer is a 13 yr. old white miniature horse we obtained from a woman who was privately rescuing horses but could not continue because of the economy.  Summer has proved to be a wonderful addition to the Luv Shack Ranch children's programs as she especially loves kids.  She travels to emergency shelters, Hope Kids events, elementary schools, literacy programs, Cave Creek/Carefree town events and almost all of our fund raising events.  She is very even tempered and stands still for kids to place their handprints on her.  In the herd she watches over the young fillies and colts, especially Scout.  Donations and sponsorships help pay for her feed, farrier, vet bills, fingerpaint and shampoos (to get the paint out).Summer Christmas Festival

BanditBandit is an 11 yr. old black and white Tobiano Paint gelding who was originally rescued in August 2006.  He was immediately adopted and became a wonderful, dependable trail horse.  Due to the economy, Bandit was returned to the Luv Shack.  What looked like a hoof problem was determined to be severe arthritis in his hocks.  We are treating him with monthly shots of Legends and he is once again rideable.  He loves working and recently participated in our Kid and Adult Camps.  Donations and sponsorships are used for his monthly shots, feed, vet and farrier trimmings as well as allowing his participation in the kid and adult camps.

Rufus at Horseshoe TrailsRufus is a 2 yr. old miniature donkey rescued in March 2009 from a local breeder who was retiring her breeding pair (Rufus' parents).  Once difficult to load and afraid of people, he has proven to be a very trainable and personable addition to the Luv Shack herd.  He loves being handled, haltered and going to events involving kids.  We have taken him to Vista Colina, an emergency family shelter, Kid Zone at Cave Creek's Bicycle Festival, and schools in the Cave Creek Elementary School district.  He and his buddies (Elijah and Tumbleweed) can be seen playing at the Luv Shack throughout the day.  Here are pictures of him at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School where he and Elijah were part of a relay race with students prior to Christmas break.  Donations and sponsorship cover his feed, farrier, vet bills and his participation in the various Luv Shack Ranch kids' programs.Rufus & Elijah in Relay Race

Charlie & HayleyCharlie is an 8 yr. old bay Quarter Horse.  Charlie became one of Joey Ogburn's personal horses because of his persistence.  One of Joey’s former employers said she could have a horse from one of his pens as settlement for what he owned her.  Joey had her eyes on a gray gelding but Charlie kept getting between them.  After the third attempt, Joey gave in, haltered Charlie and brought him home.  His job in the herd is taking care of orphaned and newly-weaned young ones.  He is also the herd clown, always ready to play, rarely taking life seriously.  He loves trail riding and is an active participant in all of the kids and adult programs.  Donations and sponsorships are used to take care of his feed, farrier, vet visits and to continue his participation in the kid and adult programs.
